It is happening again

... reminds me of the song which goes by the same name... ("griffin house")

Anyway, the awesomely dedicated Gandhian is back in action!! Anna Hazare and his satyagraha styled fight for anti corruption has lifted people's spirits once again. Why did it happen again? ... rewinding a bit....

Episode 1: Started in April 2011, the whole "Jan Lokpal Bill" idea for infy transparency with the aim to curbmaxx corruption was generated by the social activists. Facing nothing but objection from the govt, Anna starts fasting so that the bill draft gets adopted by the govt. Fear of getting unmasked and ashamed, 4 days into Anna's fast, the govt does accept the bill draft on certain 'terms and conditions'. Govt said: We will draft our version of the bill and you draft yours. Sounded fair. Everyone seemed satisfied and got back to their work.

Episode 2: Both , the govt and Jan LokPal drafted their versions of the bill. The govt. introduced its version in the Parliament session. The 'terms and conditions' turned out to be unsatisfactory.Team Anna gave it a name "Joke Pal Bill." - suggesting a complete mockery of his original plan. So he decided to fast again. Satyagraha. Again. A safe and a proven tactic. But, Anna gets arrested this time around. Everyone knows that Anna is on the right side of things here and he does not deserve this. What next? Protests everywhere to release Anna. Govt wants to save its ass. Common Man v/s the Govt. Same old story. More episodes to follow.... Meanwhile...

Where do we fit in all this?
Awareness. Spread the word. Support the good. Have an opinion on the right side of things.
Discuss. Debate. Fire up !!

Lets support Anna. He deserves a lot more than what he has been through. :)

Be a part of the human chain today @iitb 5:30 pm . Make a difference.

Fire Alarms and Fuel Cells: A Scottish Summer

A two month international holiday break in the name of internship ! I think the neverending wait for the visa is worth it. Absolutely! A new country, new surroundings, new people, newer experiences always worth it :)

The university in which I am currently interning is in a small town called St Andrews in Scotland. It is a university town with a population of a mere 15000. The fact that Prince William and Kate Middleton are the univ's alumni makes it more interesting. There are wedding pics all over in the university and some parts in the town ! One can feel their love and romance everywhere in the whole town! Love-is-in-the air kinda feel :)

Now about my project. There is already some research going on in the university (school of chemistry to be precise) on a new proposed design of a fuel cell which is called as a SOFCroll made using tape casting and screen printing. The interesting thing about this new design is that it is supposedly more efficient and material savings hence the cost reduction. But there are disadvantages too that the design itself has to be exact for proper performance of the cell and also the crossover of the electrolyte and mixing of the hydrogen and oxygen gases lessening the output voltage. My work involves to find out ways to avoid the crossover and try to increase(sumhow :P) the output voltage and also test some already prepared fuel cells. It sounds quite interesting but I have to know a lot of stuff bfore I can be anywhere close to that :P. Since a week, I have been reading stuff and getting to know the labs here and my labbies :)

Now this may seem weird but its true! The people here are really mad about safety. REALLY MAD! There are fire alarms and fire exits almost everywhere in the department!! There are safety handbooks and lectures about health and safety frequently which are compulsory! and the most weirest part , there is a fire alarm check and a drill (which is really annoying :P) every wednesday 4 pm( I dont know whats with the specific time :P) the insanely annoying alarm runs unecessarily for 1 minute in which the people in the dept should evacuate and ACT as if there is a fire :P and the fire dept etc etc come to the scene etc etc ... damn drill ! ... seemed infy weird the first time! anyways ...all I can say is 'safety first' paranoid people :P !

Apart from fire alarms and fuel cells, its infinitely cold here ! 10 degrees maxx and too windy. Though there are heaters everywhere, it is shivery ! The town is quite picturesque :) too much greenery, 2 beaches West sands and the East sands, A Castle and a Cathedral which add to the ancientness of the town. The town has a nice british stone feel to it. TESCO supermarket is AWESUM ! The people are quite friendly and helpful and infy mannerful.

I wish there were some more people around :P ... Overall till now, it has been a nice experience. Looking forward to the rest of the internship :)

The wait...प्रतीक्षा

Either reject it or grant it ! Why take so much time? Atleast tell me why is it taking so much time.. huh ! it has been like forever now. Cant wait anymore. Even Patience has a limit! ... I am not supposed to even communicate with the visa officials ! Only one toll free number which keeps on repeating the same f*****g recorded stuff ! Damn the costumer service !

Meanwhile time has slowed down. I am stuck in no man's land. I cant even try for other options till I get to know about the status of my visa application! Just wait and kill time. Its does kinda get boring sometimes but just cant help the situation. Its just plain and simple prate'ee'eksha!!
FINGERS CROSSED !

World Cup and Anna Hazare

De Ghumake! De diya Ghumake! A long 28 year wait finally over !! A moment impinged in history books forever. Cricket-clad newspapers front paged with "Once upon a time in Mumbai","Dhoni does a Kapil", "Wankhede casts a spell for Sachin" etc.... No Doubt! The Indian Cricket Team deserves it. Infy Kudos to Dhoni and Co for pulling it off and living upto the expectations of billions of people of this cricket frenzied nation. RESPECT the team.

This win has done a lot to this nation than anything else that would have done even close. It has brought the people together with joy. yes ! UNITY! The celebrations after the win were unprecedented. Memorable sights people celebrating as they shared their Joy with friends family and even strangers! and everyone had a smile on their face. Such pure unadulterated joy ! Such Emotions! Such Unity! Such Bliss! Such happiness! Such a true patriotic feeling to have conquered the world ! I am glad to be alive to witness this epic feat and the impact it has had on me and the people around me :)

A lesson thus learnt. If a common passion drives the people of our country crazy, we unite to give our full support to make sure we reach our goal. Ok now, Cricket is considered a religion and all that.Fine. But why restrict only to cricket? We all know our country is facing much graver ageold problems. Corruption is one of them, the root cause you can say. Its time we are ignorant about it and actually do something instead of cribbing.

Anna Hazare is in the news. Do check the news if you arent in touch! In short, Anna Hazare is a 72 year old social activist who is on a hunger fast till government supports to pass the LokPal bill which will give accountability to curb corruption. A mini Satyagraha as the media call it. True. A bold move to curb corruption. and the govt will think twice on this issue since they themselves are corrupt! and ofcourse they are afraid that their darker sides will be revealed to the common man. Bow down to Anna Hazare seriously! A gutsy step taken by the man !

As people of this country, we should support Anna Hazare in whatever way we can. It is in such times, support from as many people from the nation is required. Lets unite for this cause! I think the timing of this hunger strike wouldnt have been better. The World Cup win is fresh in peoples minds and the unity which it brought with it too. Lets show our full support to curb corruption ! Unity wins over everything else. It does ! World cup win is an example. Lets get inspired by the World cup win and Anna Hazare and do our bit!! Even if its just about spreading the message, do it. UNITE SUPPORT. CONQUER !

Adventure it was !! \m/

I love adventure, travelling and exploring novelty, be it experiences, places or anything else in life and I dream to serve in the army someday :P

So here I was planning to do a water sports course in a place called Pong Dam, Himachal Pradesh. Its a 15 day course conducted by ABVIMAS (Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and allied sports) in December. Once I reached a day before the course was scheduled to start, an unexpected rare thing happened. The lake where the course had to take place was half frozen !! The instructors there blamed global warming and the erratic weather for the circumstances and hence the course got cancelled :( . Disappointed I was but there was an opportunity for an adventure here :) This is where the adventure/unexpectedness/fun part started. I didnt want to go back home just then. I had a budget of 7k for the 15 days. Given the budget constraint, I thought of covering as many "popular" places as I could, "one place(city) per day" deal :P

December chilly winds made it more enduring. First destination on my "unplanned" list was Chandigarh, the city of peace, coz it was the major nearest city to Pong Dam. A 5 hr bus ride from Talwara town(pong dam) took me to my destination. Chandigarh is an awesumly planned city with "sectors" everywhere. Made a halt for a day there at the sector 43 ISBT(Inter state bus station), got on this hop on hop off tourism bus which takes around the city. Rock garden , Sukhna Lake and the art museum were worth visiting there. One more thing which impressed me was that the roads there have a separate lane for cyclists :) ... Some evening tp roaming around sectors nearby the bus station ate my time.

A little research and some pooch-taach suggested me to choose Delhi as my next destination. An almost overnight bus journey from Chandigarh and I hence reached Delhi at around 3 in the morning. Infy chilly shivery weather it was!! A costly rickshaw ride to a lodge nearby was truely freezing ! A 6 hr rest at the lodge, then a Delhi darshan bus in the morning. Delhi is infy secured everywhere. Houses of VIPs, police vans, sirened vehicles spanned the streets of Delhi. Places I got to visit were the Birla Mandir, India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhavan area, Indira Gandhi House (now turned into a museum... but worth seeing ! awesum it is seriosly !), Lotus temple meditation center (calm peaceful place for meditation for all religions...a nice concept, reminded me of the Pagoda in Gorai, Borivali), Gandhi Samadhi, Red Fort, Chandni Chowk market area for some evening tp. To end, some chaat on the streets of Chandni Chowk then had to think about my next city :P ... I had 2 options here: Amritsar coz I wanted to visit The Golden Temple, and Jaipur. Then budget suggested me to go to Jaipur coz Amritsar is north of Delhi and I had to complete my circle bak to Mumbai hence chose south of Delhi, hence Jaipur \m/.

An overnight 7 hr sleeper bus journey from Delhi to Jaipur, The Pink City, and I was there. Some freshening up at a lodge near the bus station and a roadside "chatpata" poha started my day in Jaipur :) Again a hop on hop off tourism bus helped me roam around Jaipur. Jantar Mantar's architecture, Hawa Mahal, City Palace are worth a watch. The breath-taking view of the city from the top of the Fort/Palace is awesum ! The streets of Jaipur have a peculiar design unique to Jaipur and I must say it has an awesum feel. Got to see a lot of camels too :P . The hop on hop off bus had this awesum rajasthani folk music goin on .. this added to the "feel" !

After Jaipur, I thought of going to Ajmer but budget constraint didnt let me do so :P ... hence after some tourist's suggestions, I decided Udaipur to be my next location. Udaipur is on the south border of Rajasthan so that I wud be a step closer to Mumbai .. turned out to b a gud choice. Again a 6-7 hr bus journey from Jaipur got me to Udaipur. Udaipur, the white city, by the look of it, is awesum... resembles a town with lakes, forts and a palace. I missed the tourism bus in Udaipur, hence took an autorickshaw to roam around the city. The City Palace is worth seeing. The whole palace took me 3 hrs, its THAT huge !! Infy foreign tourists there. Theres a temple on top of a mountain and a cable car ride which takes you there, the view from the the temple apex is cool !!
Then there are museums and a lake in the city the area surrounding the lake seemed a nice chill out place. Maharana Pratap and Chetak memorial reminded me of the history in school and Chetak's bravery \m/ ... A brave horse indeed !!

The buses from Udaipur to Mumbai are infy long.. abt 13-14 hrs or so. Hence I needed a halt in between. There were 3 options I had which were at a 7 hr distance from Udaipur... Ahmedabad, Surat and Kota... Kota ditch coz JEE wud b the only "sight seeing" there :P .... Ahmedabad ditch too coz its a commercial city nothin much to roam around and see.... So Surat it was finally... A sleeper bus ride to Surat got me there. Awesumly cheap sharing rickshaws in Surat. Got into the railway station waiting room, dumped the luggage in a locker and freshened up. After all the chilly weather for 6 days, a breather atlast .. phew! got to remove my sweater :P... ate some jalebi and papdi as a popular breakfast there and boarded bus no. 128 to Dumas chowpatty from the station. A 14 rs ticket one way and a 45 min ride to a calm peaceful so called beach was worth it. Then a Gandhi Baug on my way bak to the station was nice too... To end the day , some tp on ring road, pan and a falooda to top it all \m/ ... A final bus journey from Surat to Bombay to seal this awesum journey !

An adventurous thrilling journey thus came to an end. Roaming around in India is quite easy :P ... thoda paisa, thodi chah aur thoda tym... bas ghoomne ke liye aur kuch nhi chahiye... so all the travel-addicts out there, pack a bag, choose ur destination and set off for a journey of a lifetym \m/ excitement is out there waiting for u ... It will be soon bfore I set out on such a journey but with a companion next tym :P

MILO + ASIA = Malaysia : Drinks in Malaysia

"Satu Me-lo Ice" ....wonder what this means?? ... well... read further .... Apparently MILO is the favourite "drink" of Malaysia. In case you are wondering what MILO is , just remember the last time you drank this nestle chocolate milk sensation. Its an addiction now. Its a hit here. You will find milo everywhere in all forms- liquid , solid( milo chocolate bars) and even gas( the milo aroma i mean) .. its pronounced "me-lo" .... So heres the case -- Whichever restoran you go to in Malaysia, and after whatever you eat there, you will be asked for "drinks" as a malaysian goodwill gesture... I was surprised when I was first asked for one , coz the only thot that crossed my mind then was "who the hell asks for 'drinks' after breakfast??" .... and you know what the "usual" drinks are right ?? needless to say .... i was suprised ... only then I realised drinks go much beyond the "usual" drinks here... evn water is treated as a "drink" ....WTF !!! .... and moreover drinking water is charged. Its actually a gud concept. Water conservation. Charge something and automatically it will be saved or used sparsely. But for chindi interners like us, it pays. :P ... neways got used to it.

Neslo is another tasty "drink" discovery. this is wat it is . Neslo = Necafe + Milo. It is a valid drink so to say... just that it is much apt to drink a hot neslo on a rainy day ....its an awesum feeling... nothing like it.. and rest theres our normal coffee(kopi), horlicks, and all possible permutations and combinations of these ... like coffee+ milo( kopi'o), horlicks + milo (horliks 'o) etc etc ...

Tea has an awesum name here - Tehtarik ... sounds weird... but tastes like the usual masala tea with hell a lot of spices. Theres no "cutting chai" here ... the glass tea quantity is enough to inflate the tummy. Worth tasting once.

Now this is a fact. Every cough syrup has some percentage of alcohol in it. and every person has sometime or the other had it in their life to supress their cough. Still people deny to have consumed alcohol in their life. Neways, Drinking is BAD for health.Seriosly.

Theres one more thing worth mentioning. CARLSBERG. Its something :P . It is actually worth mentioning . Credit to the first timers. Thank you Parth :)

Ok.Now the non-drinks part. Parth had come for the weekend from Penang,USM. He spent the weekend with us. Neways, it was worth becomin a Ghana fan for a night ..Well .. It was a FIFA + McD(french fries :P ) + Pizza Hut nightout at KL- Bukit Bintang. It was worth every minute. A tight match, surrounding carlsberg, (free)nch fries, coffee, foot massage salons everywhere ... a lively place ... apt for KL nitelife. Ultimately Ghana won. The fact remains - "It doesnt matter if you are black or white". Racists suck :P :P

The weekend earlier was Genting Highlands. Infi fun. enjoyed the genting weekend, especially the chopsticks on fathers day thing. Will never forget the casino and the chinese who helped me earn 4 RM.

Meanwhile my Mom Dad are on a Malaysia and Singapore tour. Met them over this weekend. Bliss :) . Thank you Mom Dad for everything. Just want to see you smiling , nothing else matters in this world.

Gotta hairdo once here. these curls r getting out of my control. But gotta pay 150 INR for the most simplest haircut :( ... neways ... will have to sometime coz have to give a presentation next week on our project work.

Meanwhile "Satu Me-Lo Ice" means -- 1 milo ice ... a "drink" served in almost all restorans in Malaysia.

So next time you go to a restoran in Malaysia, do say " Me-lo Ice " ... You will LOVE it !!!
